4 Reasons to Escape to Miami

Warm, sugar sand beaches, clear blue ocean, lush hotels, and a whole new world of interesting flora and fauna await you in Miami, Florida. This is one destination that has no shortage of incredible things to see and do. Known as ‘The Magic City,’ Miami might be the perfect spot for your next getaway. Here are four of the can’t-miss places to see in Miami.

*Disclaimer: Before heading out to the beach or lining up for a tour, make sure to check each location for their COVID-19 policies and procedures as these may change from time to time. At the time this article was written, each of the following attractions are requiring face coverings.

1. Miami’s Beautiful Beaches

If you’re visiting Miami, a beach day is a must. Miami’s beaches are known for fine, white sand and relaxing breezes. While there are several beaches in Miami to choose from, here are a few to consider for your next trip:

  • Matheson Hammock – This 130-acre park features a man made tidal pool fed by adjacent Biscayne Bay. Because the water is so calm and not very deep, Matheson Hammock is the perfect place for families to enjoy a day at the beach.

  • Crandon Park – If you’re looking for pristine, white sand, sea grass, and sand dunes, with the chance of encountering unique South Florida bird species, Crandon Park might be the beach destination for you.

  • Bal Harbour Beach – When you’re ready to join the rich and famous, look no further than Bal Harbour. This gorgeous beach is close to ritzy shopping, high-end spas, and upscale dining.

2. Art Deco Historic District

Miami’s Art Deco Historic District is home to the largest concentration of historic Art Deco architecture in the United States. With over 800 historic buildings making up this district, you’ll need a guide. Thankfully, the Miami Design Preservation League offers guided walking tours so you won’t miss a thing.

3. Not One, but Two National Parks

Here’s a fun piece of trivia for you: Miami-Dade County, where Miami is located, is the only county in the U.S. with two national parks. If you have the opportunity to enjoy both of these parks, you couldn’t have two more different experiences:

  • Everglades National Park – This 1.5 million-acre, internationally-protected park boasts a unique ecosystem of subtropical wilderness complete with marshes, mangroves, and swamp with all the fascinating wildlife you can imagine. And yes, you can enjoy an airboat ride just like in the movies!

  • Biscayne National Park – Not many national parks can claim to be 95% water, but Biscayne National Park can! In fact, most of this park is only accessible by boat. Visitors to Biscayne can enjoy snorkeling to view coral reef, aquatic flora and fauna, and even shipwrecks. Don’t have a boat? Join one of their tours to see what this unique national park has to offer.

4. Cruise Down Ocean Drive

It’s possible to take a nice joyride down Ocean Drive in your minivan, but it’s always best in a classic convertible, naturally. This is because Ocean Drive is where you go to see and be seen in Miami. With the beach to one side of the road and Art Deco boutique hotels, cafes, shops, and nightclubs on the other, this is the place to be day or night.

Ocean Drive starts at the southern end of Miami Beach island at South Pointe (south of First Street) and travels north. It’s not long, but traffic can be intense – of course that’s just because everyone else is hoping to catch the action, just like you.
