The Dayton International Airport (DAY) and the City of Dayton’s Recreation and Youth Services Department have teamed up with the Western and Southern Tennis Open to provide a free day of tennis activities for over 200 Dayton kids on Saturday, August 10, 2018, at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of tennis drills, game setups, lunch, and autograph sessions with professional players.
“The Dayton Day Tennis event is absolutely amazing! The youth we take truly enjoy themselves and some are now even playing tennis in our program,” said Lamonte Hall, Recreation Program Coordinator. “Our mission is focused on providing quality recreation programs for our residents, so Dayton DAY is a perfect partnership for us.”
Most of the youth we serve are very familiar with basketball and football, the two dominant sports within the City of Dayton; but the Dayton DAY event gives the city an opportunity to introduce Dayton youth to tennis. Not only are young people introduced to the game, they also have the opportunity to learn skills, watch tennis practices and matches, and maybe even bump into a tennis star. Most of all, they have fun. Parents are also invited to participate with their children, so it’s ultimately an event for the whole family. Recreation and Youth Services will be providing transportation for individuals and volunteers, while several local high schools that are participating with their tennis teams and coaches, will be responsible for transporting their players. Volunteer positions are filled for 2018 Dayton DAY, however, there are other opportunities to volunteer to help mentor Dayton youth. “For the past several years, this has been a great opportunity to get the Dayton International Airport in front of people who regularly choose which airport they want to fly out of on trips,” said Terry Slaybaugh, director of aviation for the City of Dayton. “Plus, the total joy you see from the kids who participate really makes it a great way for the airport to give back to the Dayton community.”
While registration has closed for the 2018 Dayton DAY, the Dayton International Airport will announce 2019 registration dates next summer.
